About Canary
Canary Labs is a process data historian system that has been around since 1985. Headquartered in Martinsburg, the company has over 20,000 installations worldwide in more than 70 countries. Canary offers numerous data connectors, a robust data collection architecture, and easy access to operational data.
Deployment Model
Canary offers flexible deployment models including on-premises, cloud, and hybrid models. Organizations can deploy the historian locally for full control over their data. Additionally, customers can leverage cloud deployments for scalability. A hybrid model is also possible, allowing firms to balance security, performance, and cost. Canary’s data historian provides a cost-effective and scalable solution for robust data collection and integration.
Typical on-premises architecture includes a data collector node, as well as a historian node which normally includes the calculation service. An Axiom web server is usually a standalone component as well. To access the data within the system, clients typically connect to Axiom from a web browser. Alternatively, when advanced data analysis is needed, clients use the Excel add-in. Where required, clients can also deploy the Store and Forward component as a proxy node between network layers.

Data Collection with Canary
Data collection within Canary typically follows a three-step process:
Collect & Store Your Data: Gather operational data from various devices such as PLCs and SCADA systems. The Canary Historian, a NoSQL time-series database, stores this data with loss-less compression. This ensures high-speed performance without compromising data quality.
Enhance and Assign Context to Your Data: Features like Virtual Views and the Calculation Server help users to transform raw data into structured, meaningful information. This step supports asset model creation and the execution of complex calculations. As a result, the Canary system augments the raw data for the benefit of end users.
Access and Integrate Your Data: Data can be accessed by end users with Canary tools like its web-based Axiom tool or its Excel add-in. Axiom enables users to build dashboards, perform advanced trending, and generate automated reports. Canary also provides connectors which can facilitate integration with other applications. Examples include the MQTT Sparkplug Publishing Client, the Canary Web API, and the ODBC Connector.
